Sustainable Measurement & Management Systems, Eco-Standards & Certification
By carefully assessing client interests and operational challenges, I help to identify and integrate existing sustainable framework measurement and management systems into core business, sector, or activities, or help develop new systems where appropriate. I helped develop and continue to support and work with several of the world’s most reputable initiatives, including but not limited to the following:
Global Sustainable Tourism Council / Criteria (GSTC) – The GSTC is a multi-stakeholder/multi-national network, hosted by United Nations Foundation dedicated to promoting sustainable tourism practices around the world. As an expert advisor, consultant and Steering Council Member throughout the development of the GSTC, I provided global leadership in helping to develop the GSTC Criteria & Global Accreditation.
Sustainable Travel Eco-Certification Program (STEP) – Having co-developed the world’s first global non-profit, industry specific triple bottom line standard at Sustainable Travel International (STI), including industry education, and criteria, indicator and audit development, we continue to support and work with STEP as arguably the most rigorous sustainable tourism standard on the market.
The Luxury Eco Certification Standard (LECS) – Another global first, I co-developed with Leading Quality Assurance the world's only voluntary, global sustainable tourism certification program offered by a non-profit organization that is specific to the luxury accommodation sector, offered by STI. LECS is a comprehensive standard that takes into consideration the specific needs and challenges of operating a new or existing luxury hotel while addressing environmental and social issues that help to protect the destinations they serve.
Sustainable Tourism Certification Network of the Americas – As a Founding Member of the Network of the Americas, I’ve provided expert advisory support in developing regional eco-certification baseline standards, harmonizing language and market development in a multi-stakeholder/multi-national arena.
STEP-Shore Excursions Standard – A cruise ship industry sustainable supply chain management initiative included assisting with the pilot launch of the shore excursion sustainability standard. Developed in collaboration with Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd, Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) and Conservation International, support included shore excursion provider education, capacity building, compliance assessment, and proposed updates to the eco-standard.
Destination Standards – Assessed and developed sustainable tourism and quality assurance standards, policies and plans at a destination level, from urban destinations to core tourism dependant countries. Examples include Portland, Belize, Ireland and Montenegro.
